Roosters: Real Contenders in 2008?

So the Roosters have signed Willie Mason, Mark O'Meley and are faring well with juniors - the likes of the Folau brothers coming through their ranks. Combine these factors with the ability of Braith Anasta, Nate Myles and Sam Perret - are they serious contenders for NRL 2008?

Rugby League is a game with no guarantees. Just look at the new recruits heading to Bondi for next year. Willie Mason has no question marks over his ability, it's simply his committment and work ethic that are sometimes a concern. This concern may also rub off on other teammates, if they fall under Willie's spell - might they slacken off?

It's a different story with Mark O'Meley, a work-a-holic, no nonsense forward - but the aging O'Meley these days is regularly injured. 2007 saw him battle several injuries and rarely reach peak fitness or form.

With Craig Wing departing and Joel Monaghan departing too - there is certainly some strike power leaving the club and in honesty, I think the club and the rookie coach in Brad Fittler need at least a year of Rugby League under their belts before they can realistically challenge for the NRL Premiership.

So 2008 should see improvement, and certainly with the junior base they have recruited - the future looks good, just don't expect instant success - it's something that's never been achieved in the NRL.

NRL Rugby League

By Adam Sutcliffe

As we sit deep in the summer off-season, NRL Rugby League is probably having it's happiest off-season ever. David Gallop and those in the corridors of power at the NRL must be extremely happy as Rugby League headlines continue to arrive and continue discussions while the game enjoys its yearly rest

With talk of the upcoming World Cup of Rugby League, the Willie Mason / Bulldogs affair and more recently the Mark Riddell assault - Rugby League remains firmly in the media spotlight. While some may argue the reasons aren't ideal, in the big bad world of marketing it doesn't matter - any headline is a good headline. It's the stuff marketers dream of, not only back page news; but pushing prime summer sports off the pages and tossing Rugby League to the forefront.

As a serious Rugby League fan you always dread the off-season, trying to take your mind off the waiting by watching some cricket or catching some off-season NRL replays, or even old Rugby League games on Fox's 'League Legends' program.

However, us deprived Rugby League fans should not only be happy with the headlines being generated in the usual quiet season, but the overall outlook of the game is certainly back on the way up.

The wounds left from the Super League War continue to heal, we saw the Gold Coast Titans enter the NRL in 2007. In other areas we saw the struggling South Sydney Rabbitohs not only thrown a lifeline by Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court, but thrive. The Bunnies bolting into their first finals outing in many years.

Amalgmated clubs are working closely together and achieving much more impressive results for their fans, the quality of our game is sparkling with raw, talented juniors. Some may complain about the exodus to the UK Super League - this is directly due to the salary cap, and it means our teams are kept as even as possible and we continue to see the most even NRL tables year after year. As players take the cash in the UK Super League, there is always someone good enough ready to step up - it continues to happen, as we see the likes of Israel Folau, Kris Inu and Jarryd Hayne strutting their stuff for their Rugby League clubs.

In 2008, we not only see the return of quality NRL Rugby League to our screens - but it's the centenary of Rugby League. A massive occasion to celebrate the game we love - "The Greatest Game of All" and we are set to be spolit with the hosting of the Rugby League World Cup, and facing possibly the strongest British Lions side in many, many years. The Lions totally dominated the Kiwi side and are setting their sights on the fancied Australian side - it's truly a feast of Rugby League in 2008, starting with the Challenge Cup where the Melbourne Storm will travel to the UK to face the Leeds Rhinos in a match where the Australian team starts as underdogs for once; facing the problems of foreign soil, weather and lack of match play.

While somethings in Rugby League won't change in 2008; such as the long delay leaving Leichhardt Oval by car, or Nathan Brown facing another year with plenty calling for his head, the interruption of major injuries to players and their teams and of course Bill Harrigan making the big calls from his eye in the sky.

All we need now to put the icing on the cake for 2008, is for Tina Turner to make a come back and give us her famous Rugby League Anthem "Simply the Best" in what would be a sensational advertising package, that would keep us rocking along during another great year of Rugby League. Yep, it will always be "The Greatest Game of All!"

Smarter Sin-Binning in the NRL

As the Rugby League officials meet today in Sydney to discuss all things League - the group will not only be covering grapple tackle discussion in the NRL forum, but also toying with the idea of bringing back the 5 minute sin bin to our game.

It certainly seems like a smart move, after being scrapped in the 1990's - the option of the 5 minute sin-bin meant that for a minor offence such as backchat or repeated infringements - referees can send players to cool their heels for 5 minutes instead of 10 minutes. The problem with 10 minute spells is that in many cases it can blow games wide open and ruin any close battle or spectacle that might have been unfolding.

The other modification around the 10 minute sin-bin rule to be discussed today; is the possible adoption of an 'early return' by the player in the bin - if the opposing team scores while he is spending time in the bin. Something that happens in NHL hockey and seems to work successfully.

Its a good thing that the sin-binning variations are being discussed, because its an area many of the smarter players take advantage of. Knowing referees are reluctant to send players for 10 miunte spells in the bin unless it's a serious offence, smarter operators will push the envelope by delaying play during defending periods or repeatedly infringe and play Russian roulette with the referee.

Discussion around a 5 minute sin-bin is a good step to bringing this old favourite back and its something that can help the game stamp out foul play, professional fouls and backchat - without ruining the game or making things hard for the referee.

Who will innovate in NRL 2008?

By Adam Sutcliffe

Innovation in Rugby League wins Premierships. Daring to bring in new techniques and break new ground can be risky for NRL clubs, but the rewards are well worth it.

As the NRL officials and heavyweights gather tomorrow for a thinktank around the game for 2008; the grapple tackle is high on the agenda and is reported to be outlawed even further after getting plenty of headlines in 2007.

Regardless of what you think of the grapple tackle, the initial development and further refinement by Craig Bellamy and his Melbourne Storm group was ground breaking. Employing wrestling coaches and squeezing every advantage from the ruck had rival clubs clammering to keep up. Other clubs complained, cried foul and did everything they could to prevent the dominant Storm getting further ahead.

Instead of complaining, rivals should have been researching and developing the next trend.

As 2008 approaches, clubs that can adapt and derive advantages from somewhere in the game will win the comp.

Evolution has been interesting to watch in the Rugby League, even in the gladiatorial days of the 80's - the likes of Warren Ryan developing the bombing raids and forcing rule changes around bomb defusion and Jack Gibson pioneering wedge plays and run arounds - each year was seeing teams pull something new out of the bag.

More recently we saw Brian Smith develop skin tight jerseys for his Parramatta Eels team in the late 90's and move that was quickly followed by Penrith and other NRL clubs and in 2003 John Lang tasted victory after blooding big bookend props that ran straight and hard - tearing through opposition sides that went for skills based forwards and men that were smaller in stature.
As quickly as the success came, in 2004 big bopper props were out of fashion. With quicker play the balls needed, the Penrith side suddenly lost out and became followers as their props were suddenly too big and slow. First designed in 2002, another item on the increase in 2004 was the 'gang tackling' technique designed by Roosters boss Ricky Stuart - getting big numbers into tackles and slowing play the balls down heavily, giving his defence plenty of time to set itself. It was a move that worked well and kept the Roosters in the top batch of NRL teams.

Moving into 2005, it was all about speed. The Wests Tigers with a tiny forward pack started playing 'touch football'. Their goal was simple, throw themselves into tackles and find the ground quickly. By submitting, their small forwards would nullify the gang-tackle and generate lightning fast game speed - allowing their impressive backline of Benji Marshall, Pat Richards and Brett Hodgson wreak havoc on the enemy.

Fast forward to current day. As the Storm enjoy their Rugby League triumph, you can bet Craig Bellamy and his crew are already discussing possible trends for 2008. Maybe other clubs should quit all the complaining and focus their energies into pioneering not constant crying. Who knows, some homework just might win them the NRL Premiership.

Parramatta Eels getting real for 2008

The Parramatta Eels have been a club that has promised so much in the last decade and not since 2001 have they faced a similar problem; where their junior talent is being chased heavily by other NRL clubs looking for to bolster their Rugby League playing rosters.

From the installment of Brian Smith at the Parramatta Eels back in 1997; the club has not only put in place some of the most ground breaking training equipment, technology and techniques - but they have harnessed and nourished a talented junior base.

The western suburbs of Parramatta and it surrounds are heavily laced with keen Rugby League juniors and a talent pool bolstered with the likes of Polynesian and Islander families heavily interested in Rugby League.

Back in 2001 as the new regime under Brian Smith all but took out the NRL Grand Prize; the well oiled machine began to fall victim of it's own success. The salary cap, retiring players, unrest and eager clubs started removing the likes of Clinton
Schifcofske, Brett Hodgson, David Vailiki, Jamie Lyon, Eric Grothe Jnr, Jason Taylor and Michael Buettner.

Somehow the club managed to remain competitive while in the midst of a so called 'rebuilding phase' - a period that has remained similar until as late as 2007.
Even in 2005, when the Eels boasted a team of 'spare parts' and rookie players - they managed to bump and grind their way to a minor premiership and nearly get themselves into the Grand Final.

Rookies in that year included the current half back Tim Smith and powerful new centre Ben Smith - young talent that the Parramatta Eels need harness before its too late.
The Eels have now been within 1 game of reaching the Grand Final, 6 times in the past 10 years. A record that shows how strong they have been without having the final ingredient to go all the way.

As 2008 approaches, the Eels seem to be at the top of their peak again. With a new talented coach settled in and an array of talent in the optimum period of their careers - the Parramatta Eels need to push hard in 2008 or risk being broken apart, as has happened in the past. Minor cracks may already be appearing; as the talented junior PJ Marsh is set free to join the Brisbane Broncos in 2008 and there are reports of hungry clubs chasing the likes of Jarryd Hayne and Kris Inu when they come off contract at the end of 2008.

The senior brigade of Nathan Hindmarsh, Nathan Cayless and Mark Riddell are truly in the twilight of their careers currently and need to find something special again in 2008. Riddell in particular will need to find something extra to cater for the loss of PJ Marsh; possibly playing extra minutes but still retaining the passionate 'super-sub' bursts he has become famous for. The same can be said for Nathan Hindmarsh; considered for many years one of the top second rowers in the NRL - the aging forward risks becoming a player in the mold of Craig Fitzgibbon who has become a work horse only player and rarely has an offensive impact on a game.

As the salary cap continues to keep clubs on a fairly level playing field; the Eels can only boast so much talent for so long - and their lives are fast running out. As 2008 approaches, they need to really make hay while the sun shines.

Sydney Roosters courting Tevita Folau

By the sounds of things, the Sydney Roosters are making all the right moves as they work hard to rebuild and once again become an NRL powerhouse club.

The past fortnight at Bondi has been a busy one, not only have Nick Politis and his team been busy trying to woo big name Willie Mason over - but the once proud Rugby League outfit has also been quietly trialing the older brother of Melbourne Storm star Israel Folau. At 22 years old, Tevita Folau is certainly not past his used by date and after serving two years on a mormon mission overseas - he returns to Australia and is ready to prove he is every bit as good as his brother.

The Roosters have done a good job to keep things under wraps as they try and get the talented Folau on their books and if early reports are right - the quality is certainly in the bloodlines; as the older Folau is reportedly even more talented than his younger brother.

Managed by Issac Moses the same man that looks after Israel and family friend Kris Inu - the Roosters have played it smart and kept the new Folau from talking to the media. So astute are the Roosters in their recruitment at present; they also have the youngest Folau - 15 year old brother Eni signed to their books. The junior Folau is different to his brothers in that he is a ball playing second rower; in a similar mould to Dean Widders.

With Arthur Beetson continuing to scout the quality kids coming through and if Nick Politis can pull off the deal of the century by luring Willie Mason - the Roosters are well and truly back. With Brad Fittler now comfortably at the helm and troops happily following orders; unlike the Chris Anderson reign - 2008 promises plenty. We should see the Roosters back on the top of the Rugby League crop in the NRL season ahead.

Jonathan Thurston and Tania Zaetta?

Since Melbourne Cup day the rumors have been circulating pretty heavily. NRL and Cowboys star Jonathan Thurston looks to be pretty smitten with high profile celebrity Tania Zaetta. The Rugby League pin-up boy was previously dating girlfriend Nicky Suey - but seems to have moved on from the old flame.

When questioned; the pair simply said they are 'good friends' - who hang-out together but the body language from recent outings seems to tell a different story.

The biggest talking point of the new couple is their age difference. Tania Zaetta; the former star of Channel 7's "Who Dares Wins!" in the mid-1990's and more recently a feature of India's 'Bollywood' Film scene - is 12 years older than NRL star Jonathan Thurston.

With both parties big celebrities in their own right; it seems like the future power couple could be big earners in the future. Look out 'Posh 'n Becks' - because it's 'JT and TZ' ...

Ashley Harrison leaves Roosters

Ashley Harrison wasn't hanging around to see how things panned out at the Roosters. Amidst all the Willie Mason signing talks at Bondi; the journey man forward snuffed out a deal with the Gold Coast Titans - securing his future for the next 3 years and putting a rest to any concern of him being a victim of a personnel clean out at the Roosters.

The move seems to be a smart one for the former Queensland Origin forward. Returning to his home base of Queensland, Ashley Harrison can focus on getting back to his best form. After leaving the Broncos several years ago to join the South Sydney Rabbitohs resurgence, the hard working forward has struggled to find top gear after joining the Roosters recently. Harrison seemingly got caught in the coaching merry-go-round at Bondi, while playing well under Ricky Stuart - he seemed to be on the outer with Chris Anderson and spent plenty of time coming off the bench early in 2007.

With his future now sured up, Harrison can really roll the sleeves up and will not only strive to get his own form into top gear - but will add some depth to the injury prone Titans pack.

At the Roosters; the coast is now very clear to make a decent tilt at Willie Mason. The Harrison move has seemingly freed up $250,000 in play money for the Bondi club and now gives Nick Politis and his team more ammo to gun hard for Willie Mason. While Mason has been offered $3 million to go to the UK - the big name prop still remains keen to base himself out of Australia and join a Sydney based club. The Roosters are in the running well and truly as they already boast former Bulldogs teammates; Braith Anasta, Mark O'Meley and Nate Myles.

Willie Mason offered 3 Million in UK

It had to happen. Willie Mason has been offered serious cash to walk away from the NRL and set up shop in the UK Super League. Bulldogs bad boy Willie Mason can be earning up to $3 million dollars for the next 3 years, and at the age of 27 this kind of cash can really end the career of the big prop on an impressive note. (or notes, millions of them).

Wigan is the UK Super League club to throw the cash at Willie Mason, they know that the price needs to be high - as Mason isn't keen to leave his Sydney base and also doesn't want to throw away his remaining representative opportunities and World Cup appearance chances in 2008.

The bonus for Wigan as that not only is Willie Mason a top class player on his day, but the big man being the human headline he is - provides a good marketing platform to the club that takes him on board. They might have to put up with his bad boy behaviour, but Mason sells. Whether that be club jerseys, stadium tickets or other merchandise - Willie Mason will keep their cash registers ringing.

The Bulldogs yesterday told Willie Mason he was not welcome at the clubs pre-season training commencement, so Mason has begun training with boxer brother Les.

While Willie would be disappointed to miss his rep games next year; surely the man has to grab this $3 million dollar offer while it's on the table. Rugby League player lifespans are getting shorter year by year now; at 27, Willie Mason needs to think business and set him and his family up for the future.

Remember this Willie; "Show me the money!"

Kiwi coach Gary Kembles weird ways

Already under a tonne of pressure, Kiwi Rugby League coach Gary Kemble is facing another wave of criticism after word has circulated about his bizzare coaching methods.

Away from the training paddock, the new Kiwi coach has reportedly humiliated players that were late for sessions or missed the team bus. An insider refusing to be named has claimed that Kemble lost total support from many of the players after instructing certain players to serve the rest of the team dinner partially naked and other players were subjected to performing the haka outdoors in the rain while the rest of the party looked on.

It certainly is an unusual method to try and build team bonding; a method that looks to have back fired for the recently appointed Kiwi Rugby League coach as the team remains winless and not even competitive on the Rugby League field.

Reports from New Zealand are suggesting not only is Kembles career at stake; but pride in the NZ Rugby League jersey and the ever present battle with Union is at stake.

Facing a confident and in-form Great Britain Lions Rugby League outfit; the Kiwi's will certainly be doing it tough to avoid a 3-0 series whitewash should they lose this Sunday morning. As NRL News has mentioned before, should the Great Britain Lions romp home - they will be full of confidence and ready to take on Australia in the upcoming Rugby League World Cup next year.

Piggy finds JT's stolen Medal

When Jason Taylors Rothmans Medal was stolen recently; the former halfback and current coach of the South Sydney Rabbitohs spoke of how much the award meant to him and how desperately he wanted it back. The chances of the thief being able to sell the medal were slim, as it's easily recognizable - however the chances of the medal being recovered were also low, as the guilty parties would not want to risk the chance of being found out.

Well not only has the medal turned up today; but the detective work has come from a very unlikely source. Parramatta hooker Mark Riddell gave Taylor a call earlier in the week to discuss the medal, saying that he had heard some news on it and was able to find the stolen award.

It seems that someone had contacted Mark Riddell saying they knew the whereabouts of the medal, and Piggy began to make inquiries to find the stolen goods.

An ecstatic Taylor has been reunited with the medal and has his former pupil to thank for the Sherlock Holmes work.

Bulldogs cleanout continues; NRL signings begin

By Adam Sutcliffe

As the Willie Mason saga shows no signs of going away early; St George Illawarra are the latest NRL team to throw their hat in the ring to snare the Bulldogs forward for next year.

The Dragons have just lost Corey Payne to the Wests Tigers in the past few days; the promising forward certainly a good get for the Tigers - who have struggled for forward size and power since winning the NRL Premiership in 2005.

Back at the Bulldogs; they have also set adrift local halfback Brent Sherwin so he can take up a contract with Castleford in the UK Super League. Shifty has struggled to find his best form since 2004 and the pressure of his long contract with the Bulldogs seemed to weigh him and his employer down at times. It certainly seems the Bulldogs have well and truly moved into a rebuilding stage; however they are one club that just seems to keep producing no-name stars year after year.

After they moved Sherwin on, speculation was rife that the Bulldogs were readying themselves for a straight swap of Willie Mason to Cronulla for halfback Brett Kimmorley. Certainly an interesting trade, and one I think would benefit both clubs. Willie would give Cronulla the size, force and experience up front and Kimmorley would give the Bulldogs the rudder they so desperately need to drive the team around.

As the Dragons make a tilt at Willie Mason, they could also genuinely be a contender for his signature. The Dragons HQ isn't too far away for Mason to travel and the Dragons may have some room to move under the salary cap after shedding some stars in the past few years.

As the Dragons and Sharks circle for Mason, and of course the money from the UK Super League is certainly a factor in this deal - don't discount the Roosters in this race. The power and dealings of Sydney boss Nick Politis should not be underestimated. Politis knows how to get a deal done and would certainly be using any leverage or angles he might have to lure the powerhouse Mason to Bondi.

Bulldogs vote to cut off Willie

The emergency board meeting held by the Bulldogs last night has seen a firm stance by the club as they voted to give permission for their marquee forward Willie Mason to negotiate with other clubs to see if their is interest in him.

It's the first step towards ousting Mason at the Canterbury Bulldogs club; while stopping short of totally sacking the prop forward - the Bulldogs have given Mason the chance to reply to the decision next week at yet another board meeting.

With Willie keen to move on and the Bulldogs now allowing him to legally discuss his future with other clubs - it does seem inevitable that the international forward will part company with the Bulldogs.

Last nights decision by the Bulldogs still keeps the ace up their sleeve. They can choose to keep Mason at the last minute should they want to; or they could also play a part in allowing which club Mason can sign with.

Overall it seems Willie Mason must leave the NRL for two reasons; the main one being money. Mason simply cannot earn the major dollars in the NRL by such a late club change - the pay packet he commands needs to be carefully planned for by all NRL clubs as they struggle to keep under the salary cap. The big wage that comes with Mason takes over 12 months of planning for most clubs and virtually all of them run close to the salary cap limit anyway, meaning Willie would have to take a huge paycut.

The other reason that Willie Mason looks set to leave the NRL is because the Bulldogs would much prefer him to play out the remaining 2 years of his deal in the UK Super League. Similar to what Parramatta did with Jamie Lyon; the Bulldogs would not want to see him playing for another NRL club that could possibly bite them on the bum in the next 2 years.

So it seems we will need to wait another week to find out the end result in the Willie Mason / Bulldogs saga. However its looking more likely that NRL Rugby League looks set to lose a major icon. The days of Homeboy Willie Mason, his entourage, bling bling, A.D.D and his almost weekly headlines could be a thing of the past. "Could be."

Willie Mason: Willie Rise Again?

As the clock ticks towards tonights Bulldogs Board Meeting; the fate of Willie Mason will be known soon enough.

The human headline has done it again, stealing all the major space in the sports sections of NSW media outlets - as he remains at loggerheads with his Belmore club. As judgement day approaches, Malcolm Noad and his Boardroom boys will certainly be happy about one thing - if they decide to cut Mason loose, the likelihood of a massive payout is very slim.

Because Mason has broken several contractual obligations and has mentioned quitting himself, the club probably won't have to send him packing with a big fat pay cheque. For Willie, it is simply a matter of cleaning out his locker, hopping in his Hummer and zooming off out of the DogHouse HQ in Belmore.

The upside for Mason is that once again he has shown his power of marketability. Love him or hate him, this guy can command big media exposure and for companies wanting to get their product in the limelight he is the ideal vehicle. Even if Willie heads to the Roosters or the Sharks and drops 200k in wages; the likes of companies such as Nike, Reebok, Asics and even clothing companies would clammer to top up Willie's wallet with fat sponsorship deals.

The only real concern for Willie Mason is the risk factor around injury. Moving away from his safe house of Belmore where a long contract was in place means that if the aging star gets into trouble with injuries; a new club might not be as forgiving - so the chances of reduced payments in years 2 and 3 are a very real possibility (if clauses are added to his new deals).

While many of us wait with anticipation to hear the outcome of the Bulldogs board meeting; I don't think big Willie will waste a second worrying about the decision. Chances are he will be cruising the mean streets of Punchbowl in his late model Hummer, with the sounds of his stereo drowning out any thoughts of concern.

Great Britain could actually be Great

By John Chelsea

Fresh from their comprehensive Game 2 defeat of the New Zealand side, the Great Britain Rugby League team in 2007 is one that is packing a decent punch.

So often in the past the media has tried to talk up the chances of the Lions just to get bums on seats in international games with Australia and New Zealand; but it seems this time they might just be the real deal.

It seems as the UK Super League continues to thrive and grow with the injection of new NRL players each year - the flow on effect is creating a giant force in the international game.

The likes of Jamie Peacock and Paul Wellens are certainly stamping their authority as genuine match winning stars. This time, the side seems to have quality in most departments however, where as in the past they may have relied on a single star.

The timing couldn't be better, finally the Australian side will have a quality and worthy opponent for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup. The only remaining question is whether this Great Britain side can play their best Rugby League on foreign soil. With the 2008 World Cup being held in Australia - should the Lions take home the Rugby League World Cup; they will certainly have earned their stripes.

The stars too are starting to align. The speed and style of the UK Super League closely mirrors the NRL more these days and the Lions are conditioned to playing under Australian Referees; quickly getting familiar with the all important interpretations that may differ from their homeland.

As their confidence grows after two impressive defeats of New Zealand; the Tony Smith coached Great Britain Lions are certainly putting the Great back into Britain. Should they manage a 3 game whitewash of the Kiwi's their confidence levels will be soaring and they have a genuine shot at the Rugby League World Cup Title in 2008.

PJ Marsh Signs with Broncos

By Adam Sutcliffe

Livewire Eels hooker PJ Marsh has been signed by the Brisbane Broncos for the next three years after Parramatta allowed the classy rake to enter the NRL market.

It certainly is a smart signing by the Broncos; as they try to cover for the loss of Shaun Berrigan to the UK Super League. Since returning from the NZ Warriors, the Eels have used Marsh in an impressive rotational role with Mark Riddell. The two rakes combining well to form one of the most feared rotation duo's in the NRL.

With Mark Riddell moving more and more towards a back row role, the Eels will certainly miss the skills of Marsh - one of the few remaining survivors from the Eels dominating 2001 squad. The experience of local boy Marsh will be sorely missed as the Eels bring the young brigade through.

The link up with the Broncos is well suited to Marsh. The Queensland representative able to get back to his roots and try his hand at making the no.9 spot truly his own north of the border. The struggling Broncos will revel with the likes of Marsh playing general as they start the rebuilding process after losing several stars in the off-season.

Willie Mason fights Bulldogs Board

It doesn't seem to just be Malcolm Noad that is squaring off with Willie Mason; it seems he may only be the mouthpiece that is simply delivering the message from some high powered Belmore board members.

While all the headlines have centered on Noad and Mason, with some stories suggesting that Malcolm Noad may even face the axe - the real reason behind the flare up is the distaste that Mason is leaving in some of the board members mouths.

The straight shooting and brash Mason has regularly got himself into trouble in the past for several indiscretions; the list really is endless - and he has always seemed to get himself a second chance.

However, this time Mason has really pushed the envelope and is putting his power to the test. Maybe his mail is wrong, it's not just Noad that wants him sorted out - it seems Willie has several enemies in the Bulldogs back office.

After missing Bulldogs functions without warning and now threatening to take part in Boxing situations without the blessings of the Bulldogs - Mason is walking a tightrope.

Something has to give. Be it Mason or maybe Noad, if Willie stays at Belmore he will forever have egg on his face. To the club and the public, he will look like the employee that threatened to quit but never quite had the guts, and his stature inside the club will be severely weakened. However, if Noad walks and Willie stays - then at least the big man actually had a minor victory of sorts and won't face the same scrutiny. On the flip side, if Willie does have the courage to walk - then the pressure will be squarely on Malcom Noad to perform big time in 2008 or the claws will be out.

So we wait with interest; will the big talking Willie stand up to his threats? Will he have the courage to walk away from his long time employer?

Or will we see the boardroom big guy Malcolm Noad take a hit for the team, will he walk away for the sake of club harmony?

Either way - Belmore isn't a happy place right now, they'll certainly want things sorted quickly as 2008 approaches.
