For all Melbourne Storm fans who can’t get to Brisbane to watch Saturday night’s semi-final against the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium, and don’t want to wait until 11.25pm to watch it on free-to-air television, don’t fear.

Melbourne Storm, in conjunction with Channel 9, will be hosting a live-site at the Water Front City Piazza, Docklands this Saturday night.

Come and watch as the Melbourne Storm attempt to knock the Broncos out of the 2008 NRL finals race, and advance to the preliminary final against the Sharks in Sydney next Friday night.

NRL Melbourne Storm seal minor premiership 2008

Thousands of Storm fans gathered at Olympic Park tonight to celebrate a 40-4 win over the South Sydney Rabbitohs, a third consecutive minor premiership and to say goodbye to a club legend.

The chase was on at Olympic Park on with the Storm winning by 36 points to snatch top spot from Manly at the end of the home and away season. A margin of 26 points and a win was needed by Melbourne to claim the J.J Giltinan Shield.

Olympic Park also welcomed for the last time n a home-and-away game veteran Matt Geyer, who has been with Melbourne since their induction into the league in 1998.

The script could not have been written any better for Geyer with a great pass from fullback Billy Slater setting him up for the first try of the match to send the loyal home fans into delirium.

The Storm looked like a team on a mission as Smith converted the try and drew the chance of Melbourne’s third consecutive minor premiership six points closer.

The Storm were all about attack in the opening ten minutes of the match with constant pressure being put on the Rabbitohs at both ends of the field.

A spanner was thrown in the works when Slater was sin-binned for 10 minutes for a professional foul only metres from his own try-line. But the Rabbitohs couldn’t capitalise, and in fact it was the Storm who scored next.

Anthony Quinn took on the South Sydney defence and slammed the ball over the line for the team’s second try.

The Rabbitohs were not without spirit, with Nathan Merritt scoring a try with less than ten minutes remaining in the opening term bringing the margin back to ten points.

Just as there seemed to be a momentum shift in favour of South Sydney, the Storm were rewarded for their continual attacking efforts with, a try from Ryan Hoffman moments before half-time swinging the moments back in Melbourne’s favour.

The second half opened up quietly with ten minutes passing without a score. The silence was broken at ‘The Graveyard’ with a classic Slater run sending the ball over the line and setting the crowd alight.

Suddenly, what had seemed to be a formidable challenge at the beginning of the match was only four points away. With 26 minutes remaining, a single try would steal top spot from Manly.

With a play that was a combination of all that makes Melbourne a deserved minor premier, Folau gathered the loose ball and Slater, with speed slammed the ball over the line to seal top spot.

Smith provided Melbourne with a little bit of breathing room, converting the try with 21 minutes remaining, providing the Storm with a 28-point lead.

The Rabbitohs continued to press forward, but Melbourne’s pressure at both ends of the field forced mistakes and led to loss of possession for the visiting team.

Brett Anderson was next on the scoresheet for the Storm, a Cooper Cronk kick sending the winger on his way over the try-line.

In a match that went all Melbourne’s way a late try from Jeremy Smith crowned the Melbourne Storm as minor premiers for the third year in a row.

It was even sweeter for Matt Geyer, taking the opportunity to kick the final goal, putting it through in style to a standing ovation from the Melbourne crowd.

NRL Slater, Inglis and Folau travel details

Melbourne Storm’s Billy Slater and Israel Folau will be arriving at Sydney airport for tonight’s Dally M Awards Ceremony on Qantas flight QF442 at 4.20pm.

Greg Inglis is already in Sydney and will not be at the airport.

Cam Smith is not travelling due to a corked thigh. With Smith required in Sydney yesterday for the Final Eight Captain’s Call, Storm medical staff did not want Smith travelling to Sydney two days in a row.

Slater, Inglis and Folau will be departing Sydney airport tomorrow morning on Qantas flight QF415 at 8.00am.

Matt Geyer Retirement

Melbourne Storm will tomorrow night honour Matt Geyer, the club’s last remaining foundation player, at a formal cocktail party on the 89^th floor of the Eureka Tower in celebration of his stellar career at the club.

Geyer will retire at the end of this season after 11 years at the club, with over 250 first-grade games to his name, along with 111 tries and 104 goals (so far).

The event will kick-off from 7.00pm as Geyer, his family and guests arrive on the purple carpet at the base of the Eureka Tower, before the formal speeches and presentations take place from 7.35pm.

The formal NRL part of the evening should be completed by approximately 8.05pm.

Media are invited to capture vision and take photos, as well as interview Geyer and any other guests of interest on the purple carpet; and capture the formal speeches.

Panthers Frank Pritchard Injury

Monday night NRL saw the Storm crush Panthers with Inglis at it again and Frank Pritchard possibly feigning injury?

The melbourne storm crushed the Penrith Panthers at Penny Park and look set to grab another minor premiership with continued late NRL Results that have been very impressive.

The Storm did their for-and-against tally no harm tonight with a commanding 40-6 win against the Penrith Panthers at CUA Stadium, with man-of-the-moment Greg Inglis helping himself to a hat-trick and closing to within two tries of Manly’s Brett Stewart and Brisbane’s Denan Kemp at the top of the league’s try-scorers list.

The performance was particular pleasing to Storm coach Craig Bellamy, but he was quick to point out there are still areas they need to work on.

“I was really happy with our first-half,” said Bellamy.

“We started the second-half a bit slow, but it’s hard to be too critical. I just thought our first-half was really good.

“We expected a tough game out there, obviously the Panthers probably needed to win tonight to stay alive and I thought our guys handled that really well in the first-half.

“If someone had of told me at the beginning of the game that would be the score I would have been really happy with that. I’m really surprised actually.”

Given Manly’s 32-point win over Wests Tigers on the weekend, the big win and subsequent points differential boost was important in Melbourne’s quest for a third straight minor premiership.

“The minor premiership, it’s a really good scalp to have on your belt, it’s a little bit under-rated in our game and we’d be proud to hold that again,” said Bellamy.

“But we’ve still got two games to go and we can still finish second or third I think so we’re just going to concern ourselves with Newcastle now. We’ll do our revue of this game tomorrow and we’ll go from there.”

After feeling each other out for the first 10 minutes, Melbourne opened the scoring when halfback Cooper Cronk sent a superb pass across the face of Israel Folau and into the arms of winger Steve Turner who out-sprinted the Panthers defence to the try-line.

Four minutes later Cronk was at it again. A perfectly placed kick from the Storm number seven saw Billy Slater challenge Penrith halfback Luke Lewis on the try-line, the clever fullback knocking the ball back into the waiting arms of Inglis who had the simple task of falling over the try-line.

A couple of minutes later Cronk was at the centre of the action again.

Kicking from his own 30 metre line, Cronk was taken out late by Luke Priddis, gifting the Storm possession from a penalty on the Panthers 20-metre line. From there the ball was spread out to Melbourne’s left with first Inglis then Matt Geyer flicking passes in the tackle, with Anthony Quinn crossing in the corner to make the score 14-nil.

Another Storm kick towards the try-line, this time from Cam Smith, saw Quinn challenge Penrith winger Michael Gordon. Both missed with their hands, but the ball ricocheted off Gordon’s head into the in-goal area, and Inglis was on the spot once again. With Cam Smith’s conversion the score had blown out to 20-nil.

The second-half started much better for the Panthers. Nathan Smith scored Penrith’s first try for the game when first Gordon made a break down the line, and then the Storm gave away an offside penalty to give the Panthers great field position and momentum.

However, their joy was short-lived when a neat set-play from Melbourne saw Slater gather at his toes brilliantly, before passing to Folau. Folau committed a couple of Penrith defenders to the tackle, but the giant centre got his right arm free to offload to Turner who scored his second for the night.

A penalty against Rhys Wesser for incorrectly playing the ball saw Melbourne get possession 10 metres from the try-line. Cam Smith tapped and instead of passing to a runner, went himself, catching the Panthers defenders unawares as he surged across the try-line for the Storm’s sixth try of the night.

Only minutes later front-rower Brett White crossed under the posts, but was deemed to have been held up by Wesser. However, only two plays later and White’s front-row partner Jeff Lima wasn’t to be denied, crossing to extend Melbourne’s lead out to 30-points.

With four minutes remaining, Inglis put the icing on the cake, scoring his third of the night after more terrific lead-up work from Slater.

The Storm will now turn its attention to Newcastle, the penultimate home-and-away game at EnergyAustralia Stadium next Saturday night. Knights coach Brian Smith was in the crowd tonight, and it would be interesting to know what he thought of Melbourne’s performance.

Matt Geyer will be playing his last game at the ground where it all began during his playing days as a junior from Mt Druitt, with retirement coming at the end of this season.

Having not made the grade with the Panthers, Geyer went on to play six games for the now defunct Western Reds, before moving to Melbourne when the Storm founded in 1998.

Geyer has since gone on to play 255 games for the club, scoring 111 tries and 104 goals in the process.

Cooper Cronk Resigns Storm

NRL and Melbourne Storm halfback Cooper Cronk committed his immediate future to the club that gave him his chance in the number seven jersey, signing a four year extension that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2013 season.

Storm Football Operations Manager Frank Ponissi, who brokered the deal with Cronk and his agent, says the deal has been a long time in the making.

“The first time we spoke with Cooper’s management about extending his deal with the club was several months ago and we’ve finally managed to sign off on the contract today,” said Ponissi.

“Given Cooper’s affection for the club and his teammates, we were always confident he would stay, but there’s always a process to go through.

“These negotiations take time, but now that it’s done we’re just delighted Cooper’s decided to stay with us. He’s an integral part of our future, he’s a tremendous leader and he’s one of the best halfbacks in the competition.”

A proud Queenslander, the lure of returning home is always strong, but Cronk says his decision to stay was an easy one.

“I never even considered leaving the Storm,” said Cronk.

“I enjoy playing for the club and I want to play for this group of coaches and players. The thought never really entered my mind to play for another club either here in Australia or overseas.

“I’ve bought a house here in Melbourne, I’ve made some really close friends and I enjoy the lifestyle. There really was no need for me to look anywhere else.”

Cronk, who played predominantly rugby union through his junior career, was a schoolboy star with St Lawrence's High School in Brisbane. The securing of Cronk is sure to see the NRL Results of the Storm continue.

He was selected for the Australian schoolboys rugby union side in 2001, but was invited to join Norths Devils in the Queensland Cup rugby league competition when spotted by Brisbane Colts coach Andy Griffin.

He quickly established himself in the Norths Queensland Cup team and was invited to train with the Storm squad at the end of 2003.

While predominantly a utility player in his early years with the Storm, filling in at hooker and five-eighth when Scott Hill or Cam Smith were unavailable, Cooper took over the halfback role in 2006 when Matt Orford left to play for Manly.

He has been a revelation in the role, winning the Dally M Halfback-of-the-Year Award in 2006 and the NRL premiership in 2007.

At the end of the 2007 season, Cronk won his first Australian jersey in the Test match against New Zealand in Wellington when the Kangaroos recorded their record breaking 58-0 win over the Kiwis.

NRL Season 2008 was starting to take shape for the race to the finals , with a lot of good quality games over the week end . Canberra , Penrith and Newcastle gathering good momentum.St George Illawarra although the score board showed a big losing margin , it did not reflect how they performed against a very tough Melbourne side , with the Dragons one man down for most of the game.

Canberra in particular have been very impressive with their win in recent weeks , they put the sword to one of the competition favourites the Sydney Roosters , and at one stage leading 24 - 0.

Canberra is a side, with no big name stars in their line up.Alan Tongue and Todd Carney being the most two recognised players in the ranks , a few more names are starting to emerge as future household names .
Todd Carney is the one who is recognised the most down in the ACT .

The controversy of Monday's nights game , with the all in brawl , and the unwarranted sending off Jason Ryles was a talking point of the weekends clashes.

All the league talk of the weekends games was quickly forgotten when all the off field dramas raised its ugly head again .The incidents which allegedly took place involved the same players and players from the same club who have had trouble in the past . All these troubles are alcohol related . The players involved are young men who want to have a good time which they are entitled to do, but end up losing focus and cause problems.Players will be in the public eye and the media scrutiny and any bad behaviour will be pounced on by the media .Players are an easy prey for the public to target as some members of the public will try and prove their toughness against footballers .They will target the players who have a bad reputation .

The likes of Brett Hodgson , Steve Menzies, Hazem El Masri , Darren Lockyer , and many others are heroes amongst fans and they are always in the headlines for the right reasons.

Canberra is on the verge of a semi final berth for quite some years, has had their club name tarnished by Todd Carney and Bronx Goodwin. Both of these players have not respect for themselves , for they fans and their team mates . All of their team mates are putting the hard yards with Captain Alan Tongue playing with a painful rib injury .

Canterbury Bankstown have being in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.First the salary cap scandal in 2002, followed by the incident on a pre season trip to Coffs Harbour, and not to mention the loud fire cracker which was lit at the ANZ stadium , many believing it was a Bulldogs supporter.With all the internal trouble and club executive leaving , the club had a very bad name amongst many other club supporters .Going to a bulldogs game became very uncomfortable , many people wanted the club kick out of the competition.This year alone the Bulldogs have had bad publicity .Outspoken player Willie Mason who brought unwanted attention to the club , left the club on bad terms . This year the Sonny Bill Williams dramas unfolded , and Reni Maitua stood down for disciplinary reasons and now Ben Roberts and Lee Ta Mari has again given the club a bad name.Ben Roberts has already being in trouble this year , it could not came at a worst time for the bulldogs , one of their worst season record for a while,with the wooden spoon in sight.
Hazem El Masri is on the verge of breaking the top point scoring record but it could go unnoticed due to stupid actions of his team mates.

All these actions has made the Bulldogs the most hated side in the competition , many will not attend a bulldogs match .With a club with so much history it is a shame all these disruptions are bring the club to its knees

These two clubs have had many great heroes come through the clubs and all their action was on the field.Both club stood by Ben Roberts of the Bulldogs and Todd Carney of the Raiders .Both Carney and Roberts have had second chances given to them, only to have those two players disrespect their club and their team mates.most of these incidents have been alcohol related.

How would the great players of the past from both clubs feel today with all the issues surrounding the club they all once proudly represented . The current good players from both clubs who will be on the receiving end of a constant abuse from rival fans .

Our great game is drowning in a bowl .Both the NRL and the clubs have to take a tougher stand and suspend the offending players for long periods , send them out to the work force to make them realise that they are not bigger then the game.The actions taken by the players of the past week may turn kids away from the league to play other sports.Other sports do have issues as well,but not as much as the league has suffered since the salary cap scandal.

It is unfortunate the good players of the game will not be recognised as the bad will out weight the good .

An interesting side-story to the clash will be the fact Stephen Kearney, Storm’s assistant coach and New Zealand head coach, will be able to run the rule over many of his national team players leading into the end-of-year World Cup. There will be a few personal duels between Kiwis from both sides, but none more potentially explosive than in the front-row between Jeff Lima and Wiki.

Lima is part the new guard of front-rowers in the Kiwi national set-up, and his performances for Melbourne over the past 18 months have been astounding. Lima arrived at the club two-and-a-half years ago after a stint in French rugby league overweight and far from becoming a regular first-grade Storm player. Fast forward to the current day, and Lima has not only forced his way into the Storm squad, he is now one of the first names on coach Craig Bellamy’s team sheets. His fitness levels are as good as anyone at the club let alone the forwards, and he can be relied upon to do the tough stuff required of a front-rower each and every week.

While Wiki could be regarded as part of the old guard of Kiwi front-rower, he is still the benchmark by which all other New Zealand front-rowers measure themselves. He’s an inspiration to all Kiwi players who pull on their national jersey and they look up to him as their leader. He doesn’t seem to be slowing down with age, and his front-row partnership with Price, another aging warhorse who doesn’t seem to be slowing down either, is as fierce and uncompromising as any in the NRL.

If Lima can take the points in this head-to-head battle, he may just secure his World Cup spot in the Kiwis line-up come season’s end.

Melbourne Storm Billy Slater beats NRL Charge

Leading NRL and Melbourne Storm fullback Billy Slater tonight successfully had his Grade 2 Contrary Conduct charge reduced to a Grade 1 offence, therefore only missing one week instead of two. Put on the chopping block after going the biff with Jason Nightingale from the St George Illawarra Dragons - Slater claimed his reactions were in self defence and the NRL judiciary agreed, taking 1 week off an initial 2 week black ban.

Slater will miss this weekend’s Round 20 clash against the New Zealand Warriors in Auckland, but will be available for Melbourne’s Round 21 home clash against the Gold Coast Titans next Friday night.

Melbourne Storm fight night with St George Dragons

Melbourne Storm tonight overcame rain, wind and a fiery opposition to defeat the St George Illawarra Dragons 26-0 at Olympic Park in front of 9,335 brave fans.

The miserable conditions set the stage for what was predicted to be one of the best clashes of the round. The Storm and the Dragons have had a history of great matches, and with both teams battling for a top four finish, Melbourne’s winter weather was unlikely to hold anyone back.

This match was no exception with the opening half providing two tries to Melbourne, three players sent to the sin, another sent off, and a heavy rain fall all in the mix.

Travelling to Melbourne in recent times has not brought St George Illawarra much luck having lost their past five matches at ‘The Graveyard’.

The Storm opened the proceedings in spectacular fashion with Israel Folau leaping over his opponent to catch the ball, before dragging a couple of would-be tacklers across the line to score Melbourne’s first try.

Folau demonstrated why he was rated as one of league’s “greatest jumpers” by the Dragons coach Nathan Brown mid-week, with his try showing that he is an unstoppable force when in full flight.

The Storm pushed forward for their second try with Steve Turner diving over the line, however they were denied by the video referee due with the Dragon’s Jason Nightingale forcing Turner out of the field.

Tensions were high, and not long after Turner’s disallowed try the two teams’ frustrations boiled over and an all-in brawl erupted resulting in Billy Slater, Adam Blair and the Dragons’ Jamie Soward given a 10-minute spell on the sidelines to cool down.

Rather than the Dragons capitalising on their numerical advantage on field, a rogue kick from front-rower Jason Ryles at Jeff Lima in the scrum saw him being sent off the field, this time for the remainder of the game.

With Melbourne’s full compliment of players back on the field, and St George one man down, the Storm ramped up the pressure having an immediate effect.

On the stroke of half-time, Lima stormed through a number of Dragon’s defenders to put the ball over the line for Melbourne’s second try of an eventful opening half, sending his team in at the break 10-0 up.

Without dampening the Storm’s drive pushing forward, this time with Jeremy Smith breaking free from the Dragons defenders to secure Storm’s third try. Instead of celebrating the try, Smith reacted to another late tackle, catalysing yet another scuffle between the two teams.

Minutes later an offload in the tackle from Israel Folau found Sika Manu on the run. The young backrower took off streaming down field leaving several Dragons in his wake, timing an immaculate pass off to Turner out wide.

The Storm were unstoppable, following another Dragons error Melbourne took advantage to see a penalty awarded cementing Matt Geyer’s customary try for the evening.

KEY MATCH UP
Could Greg Inglis’ duel with Mark Gasnier be the individual duel of the year? Gasnier clearly got the better of Inglis in Game I of the State-of-Origin series while Inglis returned the favour in Game II in one of the most dominant individual displays in Origin history. Showdown III between these two may go along way to deciding who really is the best centre in the world.

Gasnier is the Dragons’ leader, and had he not been heading to France next year, would probably be captain of the New South Wales State-of-Origin team next year if recent comments from Blues coach Craig Bellamy are anything to go by. He is the complete package when it comes to centres – strong, powerful, quick and is equally adept at scoring tries or setting them up for teammates. There isn’t much he can’t do and he’ll be looking to leave the Red V with some fond memories, starting with a five star performance in Melbourne against Inglis.

During the week Inglis became the youngest player ever to be named the game’s best player in the coveted Rugby League Week players’ poll. In his past three club games he has scored eight tries, most of them spectacular, and probably scored nine Dally M votes as well. While Inglis has been accused of playing a good game one week and then going missing for a fortnight, he’s really started to put together best-on-ground performances on a regular basis. There’s no doubt he’s the most talented player in the NRL, but if he can produce what he’s capable of week-in week-out, there’s no doubt he will go down in history as one of the game’s greats. And let’s not forget, he is only 21.

Official: Mark Gasnier to Quit NRL and play Rugby Union

Announced today at a Dragons press conference, NRL star Mark Gasnier will quit the NRL to play Rugby Union in France from 2009, after 3rd party payment portions of his NRL playing contract were not honoured in recent times.

Gasnier confirmed the move wasn't motivated by money, but explained he has been missing out on 1/3 of his wages because of non-payment by an unnamed entity.

The Dragons however will have a tonne of salary cap freed for their assault on the NRL premiership next year under Wayne Bennett as head coach.

Injuries have also conspired to deplete the Wests Tigers line-up. Halfback Matthew Head is out with shoulder and thumb injuries while is front-rower Todd Payten is out indefinitely with a hamstring injury. Add Ryan O’Hara (broken jaw) and Danny Galea (ankle) who are out for the season and the casualty ward at Wests Tigers makes for depressing viewing.

However, one player they do have fit and firing on the field at the moment is five-eight Benji Marshall. With five line-break assists and six try assists in just nine games, Marshall needs to provide the spark for a side averaging just 1,241 metres of territory a game – the worst in the NRL.

His battle with Greg Inglis will be one of the individual clashes of the season. They are arguably the two most exciting players in the competition when on-song, and Monday night could well be where these two light up the night.

Since Origin II where he single-handedly destroyed New South Wales and lead Queensland to a 30-0 win at Suncorp Stadium, Inglis has been in career best form. Against Canberra last Sunday coach Craig Bellamy said after the game he believed Inglis had taken his game to another level, not skill-wise, but tough-wise. Inglis has always been the most talented player in the NRL, now he was adding mental toughness to his arsenal as well.

As the State of Origin Series for 2008 gets into full swing with the NSW Blues taking first blood in the 3 game series, the Queensland Origin selectors must bite the bullet and choose Scott Prince in their team for Game 2 in Queensland.

While Scott Prince went down with his Gold Coast Titans today in a face off against the Wests Tigers, he remains the halfback with the most creativity and his form simply cannot be ignored as he continues to press his claims for a birth in the Queensland maroons side.

While Darren Lockyer remains injured; some say he *may* play in the State of Origin Game 2, but this remains highly unlikely and while Jonathan Thurston is sure to keep his no.7 spot, the change involved Karmichael Hunt and Scott Prince must surely be enacted.

Karmichael Hunt was forced to do too much defence and basically he had no input for the Queensland attack as the NSW Blues forced they way into the lead and never let it go; the side winning the opening ANZ Stadium game in comfortable fashion and under coach Craig Bellamy they remain hot favourites among sports betters, bookies and all NRL punters.

So hold on to your hats, check your odds and if you are a Queensland supporter, for NRL Results, the NRL Table and make sure your selectors choose Scott Prince.

NRL judiciary results

The NRL News team was at the judiciary last night to see Brisbane Broncos fullback Karmichael Hunt escape his shoulder charge ban for his hit on Braith Anasta in last rounds clash. As predicted, many including the panel felt that Anasta had slipped causing no other option but for Karmichael to smash his shoulder into Braiths nose forcing the footy officials to put the incident on report.

The Rugby League quality in that match remained high and the Sydney Roosters this week take on the Melbourne Storm in what should be a classic encounter in Sydney.

For the Broncos, Karmichael Hunt has now been struck down with injury. Meaning all his and the teams hard work at the judiciary was all for nothing and the popular fullback could be sitting out this rounds NRL action from the bench until fully fit.

The Broncos face the North Queensland Cowboys in this Round 3 2008 match up and many felt the Broncos were specials with Karmichael Hunt in the lineup.

At this stage, its not known how the Broncos will cover positionally. We may even see the worlds best player in Darren Lockyer move back to his old position of fullback and make way for someone else at pivot.

Forgotten men, Canberra Raiders

The Canberra Raiders used to be called the Green Machine. Housing Rugby League royalty in the 1990's - Laurie Daley, Ricky Stuart and Mal Meninga were the stars of the show. Taking the side to footy greatness and winning the competition several times. They were the benchmark.

In 2008, the Raiders consistently struggle for positive NRL Results. They have a seemingly strong coach, they have talented players and while the ACT isn't Sydney - they have a crowd and home all of their own to tap into.

Whats missing? Its hard to say. But tonight the Raiders face fellow strugglers the Penrith Panthers. They will get no better chance to grab a win and get their NRL season underway than at CUA Stadium. Also in the mix, is their old coach Matt Elliott is all makes for good theatre and maybe, just maybe - those Green Men can get it together.

NRL Results mixed in Round 2

With NRL Round 2 getting underway last night, the NRL Results are immediately mixed as two outsiders in the Bulldogs and the Broncos managed to upset their opponents, Souths and the Sydney Roosters as the 2nd round gets into full swing.

Big hits and controversy again weren't far away with Braith Anasta copping a badly broken nose as Karmichael Hunt slammed him in a misguided shoulder charge.

The Souths boys and coach Jason Taylor are also under the pump now after losing to Steve Folkes and his revived Bulldogs in a second half comeback.

The 2008 Rugby League season is already underway, with Round 1 of the NRL Premiership now completed and the first batch of all important NRL Results have been tallied and the Ladder begins to start forming.

Starting with healthy wins were the Melbourne Storm, Brisbane Broncos and Parramatta Eels - each team having solid Round 1, 2008 NRL wins. World Club Challenge Result

NRL Results are in from the World Club Challenge in Leeds. With the local Rhinos side running out winners and accounting for the Melbourne Storm 11-4. In torrid weather conditions, the game was a hard fought slug fest with niether team getting much open space on a rugby league field that was wet, slushy and extremely slippery.

Standouts for the Rhinos were Brent Webb and Kevin Sinfield and for the Storm, it was Billy Slater and Ryan Hoffman doing plenty of damage as they took the footy up to the best of the UK Super League.

With NRL Results in from the recent round of trial matches, it seems the Newcastle Knights might have a little more to give in 2008. NRL results are in from the trial games last night, with the Storm crushing Manly yet again in a heavy defeat for the Eagles and the gritty Newcastle Knights coming home stronger to overrun an initially classy NZ Warriors outfit.

The Storm won their Gosford match with the Eagles in emphatic style, final score 56-10 with coach Bellamy happy with the depth from the Melbourne club.

In Auckland, the Warriors let most of the way on the back of tradesman like structure however their simply ran out of petrol, with fitness a concern and the Knights did enough to hang in there and overrun the home team in the end. A good boost for the strugglers from 2007.

Manly and Melbourne Set to Battle

The Grand Final rematch is only a few days away with Manly up against the Melbourne Storm in Gosford in an early NRL 2008 trial game. The Storm will need the run much more than the Eagles, as the Melbourne team will shortly fly out to face Leeds in the World Club Challenge Rugby League showdown.

Rooster trouble in Wollongong

The southern sleepy hollow of Wollongong isn't so sleepy anymore, with a second NRL incident taking place on the weekend - the second in the space of a week, as Rooster Shaun Kenny-Dowell became involved in a heated brawl after locals swiped some cash from his wallent.

It's amazing considering NRL Results aren't even on the board, but there are consistent Rugby League headlines each week as players continue to get themselves in harms way and keen media are there to tell the world.

Reports suggest Kenny Dowell left his wallet at a fast food outlet and returned soon after to get it. He eventually got the wallet, but had all the cash taken. He approached a group of bystanders about the theft and a brawl soon followed.

Do you support day time Grand Final?

As the NRL have changed the rule for the Grand Final timeslot in 2008, are you happy about the kick-off being 5pm? While many complained, there was surely a great few who enjoyed the later time slot allowing for a full day of Rugby League action.

With lower grades being played through out the day and coverage from Fox Sports showing Grand Finals from previous years - it truly was a feast of Football before the big kick off in the night (around 7pm)

It will be hard to tell if successful, at least until we see it at the new time of 5pm in 2008.

Wayne Bennett - will he stay in NRL?

Wayne Bennett the coach of the Brisbane Broncos continues to laugh off speculation he might be cut short in his reign as coach of the Broncos in the 2008 NRL. No stranger to controversy, the Broncos have remained frustrated at Bennett after he nearly left to join the Sydney Roosters for 2007.

Bennett is also in talks with the New Zealand Rugby league about a coaching advisor or full coaching role for the side throughout 2008. Regardless Bennett continues to defy age and guide the Broncos in the right direction; winning the NRL premiership as recently as 2006 - they are certainly not a spent force and neither is Bennett.

Dave Taylor holds aces for Broncos

In an age of NRL where most players, regardless of quality are more like clones and highly tuned athletes produced through years of hi-tech moulding - it's refreshing to see the likes of Dave Taylor from the Brisbane Broncos burst onto the scene and remind of us of bygone eras; where the likes of Gene Myles, Greg Dowling and Martin Bella roamed.

There is no questioning the ability of new NRL sensational Dave Taylor, but the likeable 'old school' prop is holding so much hope for the ailing Brisbane Broncos. With coach Wayne Bennett almost set to move into his retirement home and a player roster that has been eroded by their premiership win in 2006, the likes of Taylor are oh so important to the proud club. At 115kg's the towering, bulky prop could carry most things on his young shoulders - chances are he'll need to do all this and more in 2008 NRL.

The Brisbane Broncos always seem to have a tonne of superstars ready to call on, but as age hits their recruits and the calling of Rugby Union which snared the likes of Wendell Sailor, Lote Tiquiri and more recently Berrick Barnes - the Broncos have at times struggled to keep things fresh and machine-like.

It's easy to forget they won the comp in 2006, after having such an average regular season the wounded Broncos went red hot in the NRL semi-finals and were able to beat Melbourne at the experience game on the day it counted.

With many stars leaving in recent years, Shane Webcke, Brent Tate and Shaun Berrigan to name a few there are plenty of holes to plug. Word has it that the other Berrigan brother Barry is on the scene and will make a re-appearance in 2008 - a much needed boost for the young brigade. The thought of a fit Darren Lockyer is a good one, but will one of the games best players be able to carry the Broncos on his back? A back that is getting more and more brittle and prone to injury as his workload and targetting from opposition take their toll.

While 2008 might seem a tall ask for the well followed Queensland club, the Broncos have been in this position before and with their local recruiting grounds being so large compared to other NRL clubs - maybe they can deal with poaching better than others.

It certainly is hard to argue with a club that has won the NRL title 6 times in 20 years in their short but impressive Rugby League life-span. Oh how a club like Cronulla would kill for stats like that.

They face a tall order, but don't write them off. If they can produce a few more Dave Taylors, there is no telling what they could achieve in 2008, it would simply be unfair to all opposing teams because 115kg giants with silky hands and good go forward speed are rare as hen's teeth, just ask those folks that play the Rugby Union game.

NRL 2008: Will Dragons fly?

They have been a notably quiet NRL club during the 2007/2008 Rugby League off-season. A proud club that has misfired poorly in recent years, will the centenary of Rugby League be their season to go all the way in NRL 2008?

The man at the helm of the St George Illawarra Dragons, Nathan Brown seems so have certainly copped his share of criticism - however the former Dragons hooker has done well to hang in there, at a time when coaches are hung out to dry so quickly.

The burning question for every NRL fan has been why have the Dragons continued to fail with virtually an Australian Rugby League Representative Team at their disposal? The likes of Trent Barrett, Matt Head, Brett Firman all now lost to the once unstoppable club. Looking further back, even the likes of Paul McGregor, Rod Wishart and Brad McKay had the talent but never got the goodies come end of season NRL.

Is it the pressure of being one of the most heavily followed NRL clubs? Even before the Saints merged with the Steelers, the Dragons boasted the biggest club memberships and a huge following amongst NRL faithful. Their merchandise out sold everyone else, ever since they won 11 premierships straight in the good old days they have had an army of fans and that has continued the thrive. Does this huge following create more expectation? Coupled with the fact that the Red Vee hasn't won the major prize in over 25 years?

Personally, I think the creativity and player talent at the Dragons disposal has been the root of the problem over the past 15 years. Having so many talented players might be thought the only ingredient to win at the highest level of NRL, however the old saying "Too many cooks, spoil the broth" rings true.

Just like NSW Origin problems in previous years, having so many talented players running their own plays, going solo and most of the time not following coaches instructions can wreak havoc on the best of sides.

Too many times the Dragons get into top gear during an NRL game, then sign off and start coasting. Other times they simply turn up and some of the players tend to rely on the superstars to get them home. A big no-no.

And more recently, injury has been a disaster for this Rugby League club. Possibly the best player in the world on his day, Mark Gasnier unfortunately seems to get injured when he trips over a blade of grass and former Australian forward Jason Ryles gets injured and rarely plays to his ability that can be oh so damaging when he puts his mind to it.

Certainly its time the Dragons deserved some luck with injury and they will be hard to stop in NRL 2008 featuring the likes of: Dean Young, Matt Cooper, Ben Creagh, Jason Ryles and of course Gaz - however another of the old sayings keeps ringing in my ears and that is "Give me enthusiasm over talent anyday of the week" and maybe that is the key to the Dragons taking the title in NRL 2008.

Manly Sea Eagles; No sign of wounds from 07

Deep into pre-season training, the Manly Sea Eagles don't seem to be showing any ill effects from their punishing 2007 Grand Final loss.

While many say "You need to lose one before you win one!" - There has been many NRL teams that have gone within a whisker of winning the Grand Final and then disappear into the cellar in the years to follow.

Regardless of the talent on display at Manly in 2007, the crushing Grand Final defeat must have been hard for the squad to have forgotten. The Eagles have also lost some quality players from their 2007 squad; the likes of Michael Monaghan; easily the Eagles best player last year and livewire pivot Travis Burns have now moved on - but balancing the scales is some impressive recruits; the likes of which weren't burnt by the heavy NRL Grand Final loss the Eagles received.

Josh Perry, Heath L'Estrange and former NRL flyer David Vaealiki all come on board with the Eagles for this coming NRL season and the depth across the squad looks impressive for Manly.

Will Manly be a force in NRL 2008? Well, they will certainly be a Top 8 team - however the loss of Michael Monaghan will severely hurt Manly. The creative and passionate Monaghan was an attacking genius for the Eagles; he was able to graft wins out on occasions and could always spark their impressive backline.

The other problem hindering Manly is the lack of a true pivot. In the loss of Burns, Manly will have to continue to use Jamie Lyon in the halves and while Lyon possess skills and ability - his dynamics simply don't suit pivot in the modern day NRL game.

Having said all that, Manly will remain a power in 2008 NRL - however, they won't repeat the 2007 feat of making the Grand Final.

South Sydney Rabbitohs 2008 comes early

As the majority of NRL teams move their pre-season Rugby League training into full swing; the South Sydney Rabbitohs have had to be in top gear earlier than most.

After achieving success in 2007 on the back of their first NRL finals berth in nearly 15 years, the Bunnies plan for 2008 starts with a mission to Florida, USA on January 26th where they will take on the Leeds Rhinos in a Rugby League exhibition match.

The journey to the United States shows how advanced the South Sydney team have become in their back office and marketing mindset; a result of astute management from the likes of Peter Holmes a Court and Russell Crowe.

Coach Jason Taylor has also worked hard in the off-season reviewing hours of NRL footage with his assistants; focusing not only on Souths' success and failures of the year - but totally reviewing the seasons of NRL front runners Melbourne Storm and Manly Sea Eagles to see exactly how those teams achieved what they did in 2007 NRL.

Taylor and the rest of the Rugby League world know that the Bunnies only needed to score more tries in 2007. Similar to Cronulla, the South Sydney outfit boasted rock solid defence but regularly struggled to put on regular points in attack.

The acquisition of Craig Wing who joins South Sydney from the Roosters was based squarely around Wing's attacking ability. And coach Jason Taylor has made no secret of the fact he wants Wing to play at halfback, a position that Wing made his own later in the year for the Sydney Roosters.

2008 promises so much yet again for the South Sydney. With leading administrators, coaching staff and player roster - Souths continue to be injected with new talent through their North Sydney feeder club. The Bears only narrowly losing the Premier League Grand Final in 2007, but producing a bundle of talent that the Bunnies can tap into at any stage.

Their depth was a revelation in 2007, digging up the likes of Issac Luke who I believe is a future rep player and throwing someone like Fetuli Talanoa into the fray in their late season charge and seeing impressive results.

Our prediction for 2008? Their impressive buildup and strategic methodolgy will most certainly see South Sydney join the NRL Top 8 finalists again in the centenary year of Rugby League.

Benji Marshall: Gambles with Tigers over career

Wests Tigers pivot Benji Marshall looks to be playing russian roulette with his young career after rejecting approaches from the Tigers to resign for a fixed period.

After Wests coach Tim Sheens inked a deal with the Rugby League club until 2010; Sheens immediately set about locking Benji Marshall up with the Tigers for as long as possible. Following advice of Sheens; Tigers club officials attempted to negotiate a deal with Marshall's manager Martin Tauber.

Tauber has rejected the Tigers advances stating that he has advised Benji Marshall at only 22 years of age and suffering recent injury and form lapses - that he again needs to prove himself on the Rugby League field for his own confidence and of course boosting his market worth.

With Marshall sidelined for long periods with shoulder problems and more recently being found out in defence on many occasions as the Tigers faltered in their late season charge for the finals - the stakes are extremely high.

If Benji Marshall reaches the end of 2008 and hasn't performed on the NRL field or continues to experience injury woes and remains sidelined; he could seriously find himself signing a minute deal or worse still - forced into early retirement.

The gamble is a big one. But so often is the case, when Rugby League players have contracts on the line - they tend to avoid or play through injury and usually come up on top. It's a simple, yet daunting equation for Marshall; perform or perish.

Cronulla Sharks: Paul Gallen captain in 2008

It's an interesting move by Ricky Stuart to name Paul Gallen as the captain of the Cronulla Sharks for 2008.

While there is no questioning the ability, workrate and passion from Paul Gallen - is he really the best man for the job? The case against Gallen, stems from his hot headed interactions with referees and his 'play dead' actions that often get him into embarrassing trouble.

Maybe it might be the best thing for Paul Gallen. The added responsibility on the Rugby League field might just stop him from taking a swan dive or make him think twice before giving the ref a spray. Gallen is also known to 'go the biff' on occasion, and surely Ricky Stuart would have had a long talk about these kinds of antics.

The Sharks really do need to make something happen in NRL 2008; and it's going to be a tough gig for Gallen and his colleagues.

Suffering from reduced crowds, limited playing talent and a fairly new back office and coaching infrastructure - the Cronulla boys do face an uphill battle. Their defence was their best asset in 2007 and their season was built around this. If they can continue this impressive stat, it will give them a nice leg up in 2008.

Their problems have been mainly out wide; lack of speed and creativity rarely saw them cross the try line this season. Many of their points came through set plays and creative half work; the brainchildren of Ricky Stuart and his talented halves Brett Kimmorley and Adam Dykes.

As pre-season training gets back into full swing after Christmas; Paul Gallen will need to pour everything into his new role as Cronulla Sharks captain. Personally, the likes of Lance Thompson or Greg Bird may have been a more suitable choice. But if Paul Gallen sticks to NRL Rugby League and stops his 'soccer-like' diving - he may just go on to be a top notch skipper.

Timana Tahu wanted to be an All Black

It was revealed today that former Newcastle Knights and Parramatta Eels flyer Timana Tahu harbored plans to become an All Black with his transition to the Rugby Union game this year.

The classy outside back revealed on New Zealand TV tonight that he personally approached former Kiwi Rugby Union man, and now Wallabies coach Robbie Deans and discussed a possible move to Super 14 team the Canterbury Crusaders with a view to moving into the famous All Black Rugby Union side.

Such is the lure of the All Black side that several Rugby League stars have become virtual traitors and have crossed country borders to play in the world renowned NZ rep side. The last in recent times was Brisbane Broncos and Australian Rep Brad Thorn who left Rugby League for Union and donned the All Black strip for several matches.

While Timana Tahu eventually signed with the NSW Warratahs, he has hinted that after his professional Rugby Union days are finished he is keen to represent the NZ Maori team; a fitting role for Tahu, himself a son of Maori father and a Aboriginal mother.

As Rugby League diehards ponder a lost star to Rugby Union, the concern shouldn't last long. Each time an NRL or League star has crossed code borders a new, improved and younger version appears. As Tahu leaves the Eels, the talented junior pool at Parramatta consisting of Kris Inu, Jarryd Hayne and Taulima Tautai are quickly ready to take up the slack. The Eels also bolstered by the 2007 off-season signing of Joe Galuvao who joins Parramatta for the 2008 NRL campaign.

It's underway. The SEO test to see if the keyword of 'John Chow' can be steered in a different direction. Internet mogul and gatekeeper of sorts, with traffic over the 300,000 page view mark each month John Chow is an internet success story without doubt.

John Chow kicked off his personal blog in mid 2006 and after humble beginnings the Canadian resident now earns in the region's of $30,000 USD each month from his efforts to monetize his site. Interestingly enough, John Chow has many competitors who actually receive more traffic - however Chow is unmatched in his ability to make money online and squeeze every advertising dollar he can from his personal blog.

After creating a personal blog post based on John Chow - I now set about raising awareness and improving the popularity of this post in the form of link backs. The more backlinks to this post on John Chow - the higher the chances of sitting in Google's top 10 for the search term 'John Chow'.

Time will tell.

NRL Player Movement 2008

NRL Player movement and signings for 2008 are continuing. Most recently former Bulldogs outside back Trent Cutler has agreed to terms with the Tigers for 2008.

The son of former Bulldogs first grader Stan Cutler, youngster Trent burst on to the scene with some confident showings in first grade when called upon. After securing a regular spot in first grade, the small standing Cutler began to struggle when fully tested under the high ball. Rival NRL teams were regularly seeking Cutler out in attack and having plenty of success.

After some horror outings, Cutler lost all confidence and was relegated to reserve grade. It seems the Bulldogs have lost all confidence in Trent Cutler too, as they continue to clean out their ranks, the young back recently snapped up by the Wests Tigers.

For the Tigers its an interesting move. Cutler certainly needs some fine tuning and confidence more than anything, if anyone can mould the boy its Tim Sheens - one of the top 5 coaches in todays NRL Rugby League climate.

Eels: Tim Smith Suspended

Parramatta Eels halfback Tim Smith has been suspended indefinitely by his NRL club after officials were alerted to his recent drinking session, only a week after player and club agreed on a cold turkey alcohol ban for Smith for the next 12 months.

The troubled Smith was recently given the benefit of the doubt by reporters here at NRL News also, however he seems to have deeper problems than first thought.

He has recently admitted himself into an inter-state rehab group for alcohol related troubles. At the age of 22, many felt the young halfback would be immediately axed by the Eels, however after reports his teammates have urged club officials to help rather than alienate the troubled star - the Rugby League club has agreed to suspend the player and see to it that he gets immediate help.

This latest episode for Tim Smith is another in a long line of headlines for the NRL in the offseason. NRL and Rugby League insiders would be quietly happy with the amount of NRL headlines being generated, stories that are boosting NRL stocks in a time when other sports take centre stage.

Denis Fitzgerald continues to bumble

The bumbling and embarrassing antics of Parramatta Eels Chief Executive Denis Fitzgerald keep continuing, this time even before NRL Rugby League season 2008 has started.

There probably aren't too many people still listening to old Denis. The Eels boss seems to have lost all respect and any idea of reality several years ago. Many of the power brokers in NRL and Rugby League circles aren't on speaking terms with Fitzgerald and it continues to amaze many how the struggling boss somehow continues to keep his job. And continue to look so stupid.

This time, Denis has managed to come out with 2 shockers in the space of 48 hours. After firstly ousting the Ray Price name from the stadium bar at the Parramatta, in favour of a 'Cumberland' name - apparently to boost public 'non-league' acceptance of the room. Many feel that a continuing to sour relationship between Fitzgerald and Price could be the real reason the former Eels great is losing his naming recognition within the club. The breakdown in relationship with Ray Price is a sad situation for the Eels club and fans alike, the former star of all the Eels Grand Finals - Price continues to get a raw deal as his seating and now naming rights are stripped away.

The always outrageous Fitzgerald has now also called for various NRL boardmembers to be stood down citing 'conflict of interest' issues. Only hours after the Ray Price situation has been aired publically.

At the NRL's Rugby League conference in the Hunter Valley, Denis the menace has opened fire and continued to poor more egg on his already covered face - by saying that Nick Politis, the Sydney Roosters chairman, Cronulla chairman Barry Pierce and St George Illawarra director Bob Millward all resign from their NRL board of directors positions.

What makes things even more embarrasing for the out of touch Eels boss, is that Fitzgerald was at one stage a member of the ARL, NSWRL and NRL boards as well as continuing to be the boss of Parramatta.

It really is amazing that this embarrasing and incompetent guy can remain in a position of power. High hypcrytical, out of touch with the real world and his actions and remarks are mind boggling.

What's the scariest, is that this guy can get into a position of power - and 99% of the Rugby League community can see how he has a negative effect on the Parramatta Eels club itself and the NRL as a whole - yet somehow he can dodge bullets and keep his bumbling self in the throne.

If there was a TV series similar to Survivor - then Denis Fitzgerald would be the ultimate contender. Somehow, after his outrageous outburts and negative relationships with Rugby League powerbrokers - this guy stays alive. Even at a personal level does this guy not feel embarrassment or realise how blatently stupid he looks? His teflon abilities would make him truly - the ultimate NRL survivor.

Oh well, it could be worse. Just spare a thought for the poor people that have to live with him.

It's almost like a broken record. How many times do we hear it? NRL player drunk, NRL player out too late, "Whats that?" you say. "You didn't know NRL players were human?"

As an NRL reporter, I am personally sick of the amount of stories circulating about NRL players lifestyle habits, social habits and where they are supposed to be or not be hanging out.

The latest episode involves the Parramatta Eels' halfback Tim Smith. And while Smith may have been involved in drinking related episodes before - is it really anything newsworthy? What has Tim Smith done? It's something that many males his same age do on a weekly basis - have a few too many drinks and get a bit too rowdy. It might not be nice, pretty or polite - but we aren't in the 1950's anymore and he hasn't killed anyone.

This time it's alleged that Tim Smith was intoxicated, used bad language and didn't have his belt done up tight enough. Come on, is this really newsworthy?

How did it reach the news? Some 'innocent' bystander took it on himself to ring all the local newspapers and tell them how it was horrible to see Tim Smith drunk and something along the lines of he had never heard such bad language before. Come on, let's get real now.

If the allegations are true, and while we certainly not condoning them - lets not string the NRL player up for murder. For example an NRL player cannot eat, sneeze or sleep anywhere without someone from the public recording every detail and ringing the newspaper gossip columns when the player forgets to wipe their bum or heaven forbid eat a meal without using a knife or folk.

It's time for the public to wake up to themselves, realise that NRL players are NOT all perfect and for these morons who decide to ring the newspapers at every instant, to really get a life and find something more interesting to talk about. Shouldn't we be talking about the Centenary of Rugby League on our doorstep for 2008?

Because if its the drinking habits of males between the age of 20 and 30 you want to study or follow - just visit any local pub or bar on a Friday or Saturday night, and if you don't want to hear naughty words then heaven forbid, make sure you are home before midnight, or your perfect mindset might be destroyed forever. Maybe our latest public critic Charles Brincat who took it upon himself to notify the papers could form a foundation or something similar? "The Society of Goodie Goodies against Swearing and Misbehaviour" perhaps?

Heck, it's a wonder this guy even knew it was an NRL player they were reporting to the gossip columns. That's all from this reporter, I am off to wash my mouth out with soap before the secret society take me away.

Wests Tigers building nicely for 2008

As our Rugby League off-season continues to boil with stories of poaching, player misbehaviour and conferences - one Sydney based team that has been quietly building their troops for an assault on the 2008 NRL is the Wests Tigers.

Already boasting the likes of Benji Marshall, Brett Hodgson and Robbie Farrah - the Tigers initially built up their forward stocks by signing boom Dragons big man Corey Payne. Now the Tigers have pulled off a real coup in luring another former Dragon; Matt Head back from the UK Super League.

The talented Head lost his chance with the Dragons, when the clubs patience ran out over his injury woes. There was never a question mark over Heads ability, the sharp halfback forcing the Dragons to offload the impressive Brett Firman only a year before. The Dragons impatience may be the Wests Tigers big gain, as the western Sydney NRL club continue to improve their roster for 2008.

Matt Head will be kept busy earning his halfback spot at the Tigers; as Wests also boast an upcoming junior with impressive bloodlines. Blake Lazarus, cousin of former NRL star Glenn; has continued to impress in lower grades and has his sights set on a first grade half back debut in the near future. A Western Suburbs junior, Lazarus spent time in the Parramatta competition before being scouted to the Wests under 20's squad.

The recruitment drive has also netted the Wests Tigers Nick Youngquest, the journey man outside back spending time more recently with Penrith. Youngquest will add speed and agility to the Wests backline and the added bonus of more goal kicking options. A talented, and also experienced Youngquest will cover nicely for the loss of Kiwi International Paul Whatuira who leaves to join the UK Super League.

With their roster filled now for 2008, the Tigers look to have plugged some holes well and added some firepower to get them back into the NRL Rugby League semi-finals for the first time since winning the prize in 2005. Coach Tim Sheens continues to have a positive effect on the club and his access to more playing talent; the likes of Matt Head, Nick Youngquest and Corey Pain only gives him more options and punch on the field.

Roosters: Real Contenders in 2008?

So the Roosters have signed Willie Mason, Mark O'Meley and are faring well with juniors - the likes of the Folau brothers coming through their ranks. Combine these factors with the ability of Braith Anasta, Nate Myles and Sam Perret - are they serious contenders for NRL 2008?

Rugby League is a game with no guarantees. Just look at the new recruits heading to Bondi for next year. Willie Mason has no question marks over his ability, it's simply his committment and work ethic that are sometimes a concern. This concern may also rub off on other teammates, if they fall under Willie's spell - might they slacken off?

It's a different story with Mark O'Meley, a work-a-holic, no nonsense forward - but the aging O'Meley these days is regularly injured. 2007 saw him battle several injuries and rarely reach peak fitness or form.

With Craig Wing departing and Joel Monaghan departing too - there is certainly some strike power leaving the club and in honesty, I think the club and the rookie coach in Brad Fittler need at least a year of Rugby League under their belts before they can realistically challenge for the NRL Premiership.

So 2008 should see improvement, and certainly with the junior base they have recruited - the future looks good, just don't expect instant success - it's something that's never been achieved in the NRL.
